One-step equations
Solve x + 4 = 16
The aim is to get x on its own. Whatever we do to one side, we do to the other, so the equation stays balanced. This one takes 1 step.
- x + 4 = 16The question.
-
Step 1: Subtract 4 on both sides −4
On the left, the x part has + 4 with it. Take 4 away from both sides to get rid of it.
x = 12On the left, the 4 cancels out. x is on its own. x = 12.
+ 4 is undone by − 4.
Answer: x = 12
Check it
Put x = 12 back into the question. If both sides come to the same number, the answer is right.
Left side: x + 4 → 12 + 4 = 16
Right side: 16 → 16
✓ Both sides are 16, so x = 12 is right.
