One-step equations
Solve x + 2 = 6
The aim is to get x on its own. Whatever we do to one side, we do to the other, so the equation stays balanced. This one takes 1 step.
- x + 2 = 6The question.
-
Step 1: Subtract 2 on both sides −2
On the left, the x part has + 2 with it. Take 2 away from both sides to get rid of it.
x = 4On the left, the 2 cancels out. x is on its own. x = 4.
+ 2 is undone by − 2.
Answer: x = 4
Check it
Put x = 4 back into the question. If both sides come to the same number, the answer is right.
Left side: x + 2 → 4 + 2 = 6
Right side: 6 → 6
✓ Both sides are 6, so x = 4 is right.
