One-step equations
Solve x + 1 = 2
The aim is to get x on its own. Whatever we do to one side, we do to the other, so the equation stays balanced. This one takes 1 step.

Step 1: Subtract 1 on both sides −1
On the left, the x part has + 1 with it. Take 1 away from both sides to get rid of it.
x = 1On the left, the 1 cancels out. x is on its own. x = 1.
+ 1 is undone by − 1.
Answer: x = 1
Check it
Put x = 1 back into the question. If both sides come to the same number, the answer is right.
Left side: x + 1 → 1 + 1 = 2
Right side: 2 → 2
✓ Both sides are 2, so x = 1 is right.
