Two-step equations
Solve x/6 + 8 = 19
The aim is to get x on its own. Whatever we do to one side, we do to the other, so the equation stays balanced. This one takes 2 steps.
- x/6 + 8 = 19The question.
-
Step 1: Subtract 8 on both sides −8
On the left, the x part has + 8 with it. Take 8 away from both sides to get rid of it.
x/6 = 11On the left, the 8 cancels out.
+ 8 is undone by − 8.
-
Step 2: Multiply by 6 on both sides ×6
x/6 means x is divided by 6. Multiply both sides by 6.
x = 66x is on its own. x = 66.
Dividing is undone by multiplying.
Answer: x = 66
Check it
Put x = 66 back into the question. If both sides come to the same number, the answer is right.
Left side: x/6 + 8 → 11 + 8 = 19
Right side: 19 → 19
✓ Both sides are 19, so x = 66 is right.
