Two-step equations
Solve 4x + 14 = 54
The aim is to get x on its own. Whatever we do to one side, we do to the other, so the equation stays balanced. This one takes 2 steps.
- 4x + 14 = 54The question.
-
Step 1: Subtract 14 on both sides โ14
On the left, the x part has + 14 with it. Take 14 away from both sides to get rid of it.
4x = 40On the left, the 14 cancels out.
+ 14 is undone by โ 14.
-
Step 2: Divide by 4 on both sides รท4
4x means 4 ร x. Divide both sides by 4 to get x on its own.
x = 10x is on its own. x = 10.
Multiplying is undone by dividing.
Answer: x = 10
Check it
Put x = 10 back into the question. If both sides come to the same number, the answer is right.
Left side: 4x + 14 โ 40 + 14 = 54
Right side: 54 โ 54
โ Both sides are 54, so x = 10 is right.
