Two-step equations
Solve 2x + 2 = 4
The aim is to get x on its own. Whatever we do to one side, we do to the other, so the equation stays balanced. This one takes 2 steps.
- 2x + 2 = 4The question.
-
Step 1: Subtract 2 on both sides โ2
On the left, the x part has + 2 with it. Take 2 away from both sides to get rid of it.
2x = 2On the left, the 2 cancels out.
+ 2 is undone by โ 2.
-
Step 2: Divide by 2 on both sides รท2
2x means 2 ร x. Divide both sides by 2 to get x on its own.
x = 1x is on its own. x = 1.
Multiplying is undone by dividing.
Answer: x = 1
Check it
Put x = 1 back into the question. If both sides come to the same number, the answer is right.
Left side: 2x + 2 โ 2 + 2 = 4
Right side: 4 โ 4
โ Both sides are 4, so x = 1 is right.
